About Dr. Ciaran Dalton
Ciarán Dalton is a sport psychologist and licensed clinical psychologist who has helped athletes of all levels maximize performance through a variety of psychological techniques and strategies, including confidence repair/maintenance/building, mental imagery, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, emotion regulation, increasing mental toughness, and improving focus, to name a few. Dr. Dalton earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from Immaculata University. He also earned his M.Ed. from Temple University and his bachelor’s degree in special education from Millersville University. Dr. Dalton was an emotional support teacher for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders for eight years at the Interboro School District and now is currently the district’s behavior specialist. These work experiences have provided extensive opportunities to work with children, adolescents, and parents.
Dr. Dalton’s extensive athletic career started when he played club soccer for Nether Providence in southeastern Pennsylvania. He played varsity soccer at Strath Haven High School for three years and was named All-Delaware County in his senior year. He played at Millersville University where he amassed 43 goals and 19 assists, earning him All-PSAC honors his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons and he was named All-Mid Atlantic and captain his senior year. Dr. Dalton earned his way into the Millersville Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018. After finishing his collegiate career, Dr. Dalton played professionally and earned a starting spot for the Cobh Ramblers in Ireland.
Dr. Dalton began his coaching career as the head junior varsity and assistant varsity coach for Strath Haven’s boy’s teams. After three successful seasons at Strath Haven, one of which included a state championship, he became the assistant coach for the men’s soccer team at Swarthmore College. Dr. Dalton helped turn a struggling program into a nationally ranked team. During his time with Swarthmore, the team has won two Centennial Conference championships, two ECAC championships, earned five NCAA tournament bids, advanced to the round of 16 four times, and has produced four All-Americans, two Academic All-Americans, and one Centennial Conference Player of the Year, who signed a professional contract with the Philadelphia Union.
Dr. Dalton is extensively involved with player recruitment, training and player development, game planning/management, and the team’s offense. He is currently the driving force behind the team’s psychological and mental approach to the game which includes pregame mental preparation through psychological concepts/music and introducing, teaching, developing, repairing, practicing, and maintaining psychological and mental skills related to athletic performance.
Dr. Dalton is a licensed psychologist practicing in Media, PA. He is experienced in and can offer sport-related psychological services to individuals, teams, and coaches, as well as other mental health services. The education and training he accrued while working toward his doctorate, as well as his extensive athletic experience at a high level as both a player and coach give him a unique and valuable perspective on sport psychology.
