Plan Your Gift

Learn About Planned Giving

With a planned gift, you create a lasting legacy.

What is planned giving?

Planned giving involves providing a future gift to a 501(c)(3) organization through your financial and estate planning. FC DELCO welcomes gifts made through various planned giving arrangements.

  • Enable you to leave a legacy for FC DELCO.
  • May entitle you to charitable income and/or gift or estate tax deductions.

Deferred Gifts of Cash or Other Assets

Bequests

A bequest is an allocation of a portion of an estate to a nonprofit organization in a legal will. It is typically allocated as either a specific amount of cash or a percentage of the donor’s total estate.

  • General — taken from general assets
  • Demonstrative — gifts from an explicit source, such as a specific bank account
  • Specific — gifts of property such as paintings, cars, cash, or jewelry
  • Residuary — gifts made after all debts and expenses are paid

Advantages of bequests include no cost during a donor’s lifetime and potential relief related to estate tax obligations for heirs.

Retirement Plans

IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and pensions can all be considered. IRAs may be especially effective because qualified charitable distributions can be directed to an organization during the donor’s lifetime.

  • Option to gift up to $100,000 per year after age 70½ to offset tax liabilities
  • May count toward required minimum distributions

Life Insurance

Life insurance allows donors to make significant contributions without impacting their current financial situation. A donor can name a charity as a beneficiary of their policy, which would be paid out upon passing.

Gifts That Pay an Income to Donors

Charitable Gift Annuities

A charitable gift annuity is a contract between a donor and a tax-exempt organization in which the annuitant receives regular payments for life based on the value of assets transferred to the organization.

Charitable Remainder Annuity Trusts (CRAT)

A donor contributes assets to an irrevocable trust that pays fixed income to designated noncharitable beneficiaries for a set period or for life, after which the remaining assets go to charity.

Charitable Remainder Unitrusts (CRUT)

A CRUT is an irrevocable tax-exempt trust that generates income and provides charitable contributions to a chosen tax-exempt organization, while potentially helping a donor fund retirement.

Pooled Income Funds

A pooled income fund is a charitable trust established and maintained by a qualified tax-exempt organization. Donors may qualify for partial tax deductions, receive income during life, and direct the remainder to charity upon death.

Gifts That Protect Donor Assets

Charitable Lead Trusts

A charitable lead trust is an irrevocable trust designed to reduce a beneficiary’s potential transfer taxes while donating to charity for a set period of time before the balance passes to noncharitable beneficiaries.

Retained Life Estates

A retained life estate allows a person to donate their home or real property while continuing to live in it for life. The donor receives an immediate income tax deduction but remains responsible for property tax, maintenance, and insurance.
