About Nicole
Nicole Barnhart stands as a towering figure in American soccer, celebrated for her exceptional goalkeeping prowess and unyielding devotion to the game. Originating from Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania, Barnhart’s soccer journey commenced at an early age, where her skills shone brightly on the field and between the posts for Boyertown High School’s men’s soccer team.
Her innate talent and relentless determination propelled her to the forefront of youth soccer, earning her a coveted spot in the U-18 U.S. National Team pool and recognition as an All-American in lacrosse. Yet, it was her formative years with FC DELCO, an esteemed club team in Pennsylvania, that truly honed her abilities. Serving as captain of the FC DELCO Lightning from 1995 to 2000, Barnhart embodied the club’s ethos of excellence, preparing herself for the challenges that lay ahead.
Reflecting on her time with FC DELCO, Barnhart expresses, “Getting back to ‘FC DELCO’ is exciting. Growing up, everyone knew what FC DELCO represented.” She underscores the pivotal role the club played in shaping aspiring players for collegiate, national team, and professional careers, emphasizing the high level of competition and development it offered.
Barnhart’s illustrious career is punctuated by Hall of Fame accolades, including inductions into the FC DELCO Hall of Fame, Southeastern Pennsylvania Soccer Hall of Fame, Boyertown Soccer Hall of Fame, Stanford Hall of Fame, and 2015 PAC-12 All-Century Team. These honors serve as testament to her enduring impact and remarkable achievements within the soccer community.
Barnhart’s collegiate journey at Stanford University further solidified her reputation as a formidable goalkeeper. Garnering prestigious accolades such as the NSCAA College 2-time All-American, she etched her name in Stanford women’s soccer history, boasting the lowest career goals-against average the program had ever seen.
Transitioning to the professional arena, Barnhart’s impact only magnified. From her early days with FC Gold Pride and Philadelphia Independence in the Women’s Professional Soccer league to her tenure with FC Kansas City in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), she consistently showcased her mastery between the posts. Notably, her pivotal role in FC Kansas City’s consecutive NWSL Championship victories in 2014 and 2015 earned her recognition as the NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year in 2013.
Beyond club endeavors, Barnhart’s contributions extended to the international stage, where she proudly represented the United States women’s national soccer team in 54 Caps with standout achievements including two Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012, she played an instrumental role in securing victories, displaying exceptional skill and composure.
Throughout her illustrious career, Barnhart has embodied resilience, passion, and an unwavering commitment to the sport she loves. As she continues to leave her mark with the Washington Spirit in the NWSL, her legacy as one of American soccer’s finest goalkeepers remains firmly etched in history.
